The History of Galahad
"You will remember nothing of before....farewell..."
It seems very odd that the first words I ever heard were the last words
uttered by another. I came to awareness in a different fashion than others,
from the tales people tell and what Auntie Emma recalls. I did not find
myself in a place of holly and spires, but rather I woke up on the floor of a
great hall with a chalice engraved in gold on the floor.
A man in bright armour stood over me and gave me a hand up. He introduced
himself as Amaranth, and said he would teach me the ways of the sword.
Somehow I knew this was important, and a lingering fragment of memory danced
just out of my grasp...something about a dark power ravaging the
lands...something about my needing to serve a god of Light and bring a new
dawn into the world.
I did not feel particularly special, and certainly not worthy of bring
anything new into the world. But I listened and trained, and worked, and
studied until I could defeat any creature or foe. I helped build new
chambers and halls in Hartswood, and I found late one evening that my mentor
Amaranth had taken to calling me "Syr".
Soon I had written a code of conduct and values, based on words that came to
me in the Hall of Chalices; and new students came into the Armoury of the
Saint. For a time the tide had turned and Light was prevalent in the lands
and none could challenge my place.
As with all things, time has a habit of moving on, especially when you like
where you are. The Knights guild grew beyond where I could take it, and
I passed it on to Syr Pelleas and went wandering in search of greater truths.
I found many...in the skies over the land, in the shadow of the World Tree,
in the tales of a Goddess, and at last, in the Light of Revelation. I took
these new Truths to heart and began the long vigil, rarely setting foot
among my fellows--standing alone and watching from afar, waiting for a sign.
It came when the mists of chaos were hurled back to the edge of nothing and I
found pressing need to return to the calling of the Code. But this time,
there were bright souls who unknowingly taught me lessons--Lille and
Guyverl--people who proved that old ways needed changing. And so I sat in
the Eldar Chamber and re-wrote The Code to fit a new world in which no one
can stand alone against the dark tide.
Things are much better now. I am no longer supreme in the land. I no
longer wield Brightdawn, the Sword of Light--and I have fallen many times
in battle. But it's a better land for all that, as I learned the meaning of
Comrade...and there is no longer a need to stand alone against a dark tide.
