Guidelines for acceptable language

As has been stated elsewhere, Cardea is a MUD for the mature player, and with that in mind, certain issues become apparent.

One of these issues is the use of language, and its effect on IC/OOC communication. This section discusses this concept and provides a set of guidelines for expletives, language, grammer and abbreviations.

OOC/IC communication

In Cardea there is a distinction between OOC and IC communication, and it can be difficult sometimes to determine which mode of speech someone is using. As a general rule, OOC statements made in tells or says should be surrounded by brackets () to denote such. Emphasis can be indicated using asterisks in the same way.

e.g. Arikarr tells you, "(Yes, I *will* be at the pubmeet)"

Expletives and insults

Playing a roleplaying game, such as Cardea, can evoke strong emotions, sometimes of a sudden and suprising nature. Thus, quite often, you might be given to use a curse, expletive or common swearwords. Most commonly used swearwords or expetives are not permitted in Cardea. Whilst we are a MUD for mature players, and a case can be argued against this rule, it exists simply to ensure that players are always assured that, if they are being insulted, it is wholly and obviously In Character.

Please keep all of your expletive statements obviously and clearly in character. If you wouldn't say it to your granny, then it doesn't have a place in roleplaying.

Languages other than English

Whilst Cardea is wholly written in the English language, we make no discrimination against other languages being used by players of Cardea. We do however encourage all players to interact, and not to exclusively use languages other than English. All dictionaries and grammatical rules are taken from British templates.

Abbreviations and Netspeak

There is no rule against using abbreviations and netspeak during play, but it is worth noting that using such contractions may often detract from your, and others, roleplaying experience. We strongly encourage the use of full sentances and grammar wherever possible. Making yourself clearly understood is a fine art, and using abbreviations and netspeak will often cause you to be misheard or misinterpreted. Please do not shout emoteicons, netspeak or abbreviations at any time during your stay in Cardea.
